"On a dark desert highway, (Cool Whip) in my hair
Warm smell of colitas, rising up through the air
Up ahead in the distance, I saw a shimmering light
My head grew heavy and my sight grew dim
I had to stop for the night"
Back in the days before the internets, we could only conjecture what the lyrics were. Hence, there were many unintentionally misheard lyrics that made it into history. Also, considering that even today, we're still unsure what the heck Glenn Frey, Don Felder, and Don Hedley were actually singing about, the idea that Cool whip would be an alternative for hair mousse is certainly acceptable.
Much time has passed since 1978, and the interpretations of the song's meaning range far and wide. I think that the real question is: What the heck is a colita? Obviously, they are rather fragrant. After a brief internet search, a denizen of soc.culture.spain wrote: “Colitas is [spanish for] "little tails", but here the songwriters are referring to ‘colas,’ the tip of a marijuana branch, where it is more potent and with more sap (said to be the best part of the leaves).”
It WAS 1978, after all.
